The Rural Building Centre (RBC), established by LEDeG in Choglamsar, Leh, is a cornerstone initiative designed to promote sustainable and climate-responsive construction in the unique high-altitude environment of Ladakh.

As part of LEDeG’s mission to empower communities through appropriate technology, the RBC showcases cost-effective, energy-efficient building techniques using locally available materials. The Centre supports the growing demand for eco-friendly housing that addresses the challenges of extreme cold, limited resources, and the need for reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

What We Do:

  • Demonstration Hub: The RBC serves as a live demonstration site for Passive Solar Housing (PSH) and other innovative building designs developed for cold desert climates.

  • Local Material Production: It promotes and produces sustainable construction materials—including mud bricks and other thermally efficient alternatives—minimizing environmental impact.

  • Commercial Brick Production: LEDeG’s RBC manufactures Compressed Earth Mud Bricks (CEMBs) as a commercial product, offering a durable, eco-friendly alternative to conventional construction materials. These bricks are available for both private buyers and institutional projects, contributing to wider adoption of green building in the region.

  • Skill Development: Through hands-on training and workshops, the RBC builds local capacity by equipping masons, artisans, engineers, and youth with the skills needed to implement sustainable construction solutions.

  • Knowledge Dissemination: In collaboration with NGOs and international partners such as GERES, the Centre has become a focal point for spreading awareness about energy-efficient architecture across Ladakh.

Why It Matters:

Ladakh faces long, harsh winters, where conventional heating methods like burning biomass and kerosene pose threats to both health and the environment. The RBC offers a viable alternative, helping households and institutions reduce fuel consumption, cut costs, and enhance indoor comfort—all while conserving the region’s fragile ecosystem.

Through the Rural Building Centre, LEDeG is not only building houses—it's building resilience, sustainability, and community empowerment in Ladakh’s most remote corners.
